Sensor
A sensor is a physical device installed at a specific location that automatically detects and records transport activity, such as people walking, biking or driving. Sensors operate continuously and collect data over time to help us understand movement patterns and trends.
Countline
A countline is an invisible line defined within a sensor's field of view. Each time a person or vehicle crosses the countline, it is recorded as a count. Countlines can be configured by transport mode and direction, allowing movement to be measured at specific locations.
What the counts represent
The counts recorded in this dashboard reflect individual vehicles or pedestrians observed crossing a countline — not the number of people travelling in or on those vehicles. For example, a bus is counted as a single unit regardless of how many passengers are aboard, and a car is counted once even if it carries multiple occupants. Passenger count data is not included; the figures represent vehicle and pedestrian movements only.
Central city cordon
The central city cordon is a defined boundary around the central city areas used to measure transport movements into and out of the area. It has been established for long-term trend analysis and counts are recorded at multiple locations along the boundary to understand overall entry and exit patterns across different transport modes.
